Decluttering during the holiday season is a rejuvenating practice that brings a sense of order and simplicity to the festive chaos. To stay in control of your home it’s a good idea to do a little sort and declutter before all the new gifts come flooding in. Here are five simple steps we recommend for a quick and easy pre-Christmas declutter.

Plastic bags

Since supermarkets started charging for bags, we have seen them multiplying in peoples homes, often taking up a whole cupboard. Ask yourself, how many bags do you really need? They can be very bulky and take up a lot of valuable space. We suggest that you keep a selection of bags folded up within a bag and keep them in a cupboard near the front door, which allows a quick grab and go when heading to the shops. If you have a car, keep a few in the boot. Recycle excess bags.

Decorations

Christmas decorations should bring you joy and happiness whilst making your house look festive. Decorations are very personal and just like any home decor, if any look like they’ve seen better days, throw them away or recycle. Late November or early December is the best time to declutter your Christmas decorations, before they go up. Don’t try and do it after the event. By that point i bet you’ll throw everything back into the box(s) to deal with next year. Besides, donating Christmas decorations after Christmas seems pointless. Donate your unwanted decorations to charity shops so someone else can enjoy them.

Christmas cards

As the festive greetings accumulate, keeping only the most meaningful cards can help

create a more organised and serene space. Selecting and preserving cards that hold sentimental value or special messages allows you to cherish the heartfelt connections shared during the holidays. Embracing a minimalist approach to Christmas cards enables

you to appreciate the meaningful sentiments without feeling overwhelmed by a surplus of paper clutter, fostering a more focused and joyful holiday atmosphere.

Candles

How many times has your candle burnt down to the end? If you’ve used the high quality ones you may have noticed that they last a lot longer and will burn to the very end. Half burnt candles can mount up and become redundant. While the upfront cost may be higher, the enhanced quality, refined fragrances, and extended burning hours make purchasing more expensive candles a worthwhile choice for those seeking a superior and more gratifying candle-burning experience.

Gift Wrap

When it comes to Christmas wrapping paper, opting for minimalistic and eco-friendly choices can be both aesthetically pleasing and environmentally conscious. Consider reducing waste by using reusable fabric wraps or recycled paper adorned with simple, timeless designs. Embracing a clutter-free approach to gift wrapping not only contributes to a cleaner, more organised space but also aligns with the spirit of sustainability, offering a thoughtful touch to your holiday celebrations.
