Looking into a cram-packed wardrobe can leave you feeling overwhelmed, sad and brings on a lot of negativity. Your wardrobe maybe full of wonderful things which you just can’t see as they lay amongst things that are old and maybe just don’t fit you any more.

Clothes are one of the things that should bring us happiness and with a simple sort and declutter this is easily achievable. Don’t forget clothes represent who we are and if that isn’t happening, your clothes aren't serving their purpose.

After a good tidy you'll know exactly what you have and will find things much faster. Everything inside your wardrobe will fit and it will be easier to maintain and hopefully make you feel happier from the start of your day.

Getting started

It can take longer than you think, so tackle a small section at a time.

  • Clear the space around you, make the bed and just make sure you have space to lay it all out and see what you have.

  • Section it out, t-shirts, shorts, dresses, jumpers etc.

  • Go though each section and sort it into categories; Keep, Sell, Donate, Recycle.

  • Clean the area then place back your 'Keep' items.

  • Items for charity or recycling, pop by the front door, making sure they actually go and don't get put back into the space you've just sorted.

Our wardrobe tips

  • Velvet hangers take up less space, stop clothes from falling off and look great.

  • Ask yourself can I live without this item? This helps slim down what you have in a tight space. The main reason people can't keep up the organisation is the volume of clothing. The more clothes you have, the harder it is to keep order.

  • Once you have sorted each section, look at your entire space and see if anything could be better placed. For example: would your jeans be better folded on a shelf rather than hung up?

  • Implementing a system you know you aren’t going to keep up means you are setting yourself up to fail. For example, does your sportswear really need folding immaculately or is that the drawer you can let yourself off?

How to keep you wardrobe organised

Before bed try and put your clothing away or in the wash basket, creating a tidy bedroom will give you a peaceful mind leading to better sleep.

  • Store any items which you don’t wear every day in another space giving your daily items more space to breath, making you feel less overwhelmed.

  • Declutter as you go, if you pop something on that you no longer love get it out of that space rather than making it a big job every year.

  • Where to store your shoes is always tricky and takes up a lot of space, Give this some thought as there maybe another area in your home which shoes could be better stored.
